UPSC Exam 2025- Exam Summary
The selection of candidates for Civil Service Examinations is based on Prelims, Main Exam, and Interview. UPSC CSE 2025 Prelims Exam will be held on 25th May 2025. The final merit list will be prepared by counting the marks scored in the UPSC Mains and Interview round. UPSC conducts the CSE exam to recruit candidates for the highly bureaucratic posts of the central government, UPSC recruits candidates for various posts which are given below. This year a total of 1129 vacancies are released for for various Civil Service posts through the Civil Service Examination (CSE) and Indian Forest Service Examination (IFS). UPSC IAS Exam 2025 Eligibility
Eligibility for UPSC is one of the first questions which crops up in the mind of a CSE aspirant. The nationality, the number of attempts, age limit and educational qualifications are some of the basic eligibility criteria for the UPSC IAS exam. All candidates must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the UPSC IAS Exam 2025 and ensure that they meet all the eligibility criteria as mentioned below.UPSC IAS Nationality
For the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), a candidate must be a citizen of India. For all other services, a candidate can either be a citizen of India or1. A citizen of Nepal/ Bhutan
2. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962 intending to permanently settle in India
3. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam intending to permanently settle in India
Note: Candidates who are subjects of Nepal/ Bhutan or Tibetan refugees are not eligible to apply for Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
UPSC IAS Age Limit (as on 1/08/2025)
Candidates must be a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 32 years of age. This means that candidates must have born not earlier than 2nd August, 1993 and not later than 1st August, 2004.Check UPSC CSE 2025 Age Relaxation in the below table:

UPSC IAS Educational Qualification
The candidate must have completed their Graduation from any of the Central or State Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University.Number of Attempts
The number of attempts allowed for each candidate in the UPSC Exam is 6 for general category candidates. While the number of attempts are 9 for OBC Category Candidates. There is no restriction on the number of attempts of SC/ST Candidates. Candidates must note if they had appeared as many times as the number of attempts allowed in UPSC CSE Prelims, then they are no more eligible for the UPSC IAS Exam.

UPSC Exam Pattern 2025
The selection of the candidates for the UPSC Civil Service Examination will be done through three stages- Prelims, Mains, and Interviews. There are 2 papers in the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam which are of Objective type while there are 9 papers in the UPSC CSE Mains Exam of descriptive type. The 1st stage of the UPSC CCE Exam 2025 Exam is the Preliminary Examination. Let's understand the UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2025 in detail. In UPSC Prelims Exam, there are 2 papers - GS Paper and CSAT Paper.
There will be 100 questions in GS paper with 2 marks for each question and there will be a negative marking of 1/3rd or 0.66 marks.
There will be 80 questions in the CSAT paper contains with 2.5 marks for each question with 1/3rd or 0.83 marks of negative marking.
No marks will be deducted for questions that you choose to leave unanswered.
The marks scored in UPSC CSE Prelims Exam, marks will not be counted in preparing the merit list.

UPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2025
The second phase of the UPSC CSE Exam is the Mains Examination which consists of 9 papers with different subjects. The marks scored in the UPSC Mains Exam 2025 will be counted in preparing the merit list for final selection. The important points to remember for UPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2025 are as follows- Paper 1 (Language Paper) and Paper 2 (English language) are qualifying in nature with 300 marks each. The minimum qualifying marks in papers 1 and 2 is 25%.Attempting all papers is compulsory.
The duration of each paper is 3 hours (180 minutes).
The subject-wise papers consist of 250 marks.
In case you don't qualify in Paper 1 and Paper 2, the rest of the mark sheets shall not be considered for evaluation and you will be declared disqualified/failed.
